Swallowing (Dysphagia)

  • Can originate from a variety of neurological or physiological impairments

  • Swallowing disorders are treated with a combination of personalized exercise plans, modification to food consistency, and compensatory strategies for safe swallowing.

  • Your Speech Pathologist may also recommend an initial instrumental assessment to evaluate swallow physiology and function prior to intervention

Tracheostomy related voice and swallowing

  • A tracheostomy is performed to provide an alternate airway for those who have difficulty breathing due to respiratory failure or if there is a physical barrier blocking air from traveling up to the mouth and nose

  • Individuals with a tracheostomy can still eat, speak, and eventually wean from the mechanical ventilator or tracheostomy tube (though this also depends on the diagnosis involved). A Speech Pathologist is an important team member in this process.

  • Managing the Passy Muir Valve or Speaking Valve

Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC)

  • AAC is an amazing tool to help individuals with communication deficits.

  • There are both low tech types and high tech types, but choosing the right approach/device and set up/programming is very important
